I recently finished reading SPARK by John Ratey and it was really fascinating!  He cites several studies that show that physical exercise actually improves mental performance.  It even increases brain cells!  That's something they told me was impossible in school.

We were taught that you were born with a fixed number of brain cells, and that in your twenties, they started dying and nothing would change that.  Turns out that activity DOES change that.  He even found that physical activity involving interaction with others, learning new things, and having fun produced the most dramatic results.  He thinks that sounds like dance, but it sounds like Personal Defense training to me!

If you haven't already read the book, I really recommend it.  If you or someone you know is "on the fence" about starting some kind of exercise or physical self-improvement plan, this should give the right kind of inspiration.

Thanks for posting this video. It was really interesting. I'm definitely going to read that book. Is it in that book that says if you exercise to "muscle fatigue" your body releases it's own HGH into the system? Great stuff!!

Hey Mike! Spark is one of several books that explains how HGH is released with intense exercise. HGH (Human Growth Hormone) is a major factor in retaining youthful vitality.

The good news is, the worse your physical condition, the easier it is to reach "intense" levels. I know some people who are out of breath walking 100 feet. What many would consider a brisk pace is like sprinting for them.
